Trio of former Bearcats receive honors

Former Aledo Bearcat Trace Mazon was selected as the Northern Texas Junior College Athletic Conference Position Player of the Week, Weatherford College announced on Friday, May 3.

The freshman third baseman finished the week with a batting average of .600 with three doubles, a home run and 12 RBI. He also drew a walk and stole two bases while scoring seven runs. 

At the time of his honor, Mazon had played in 49 games and was leading the Coyotes in doubles (21) and RBI (61). He was also batting .353 with a .541 slugging percentage, a .443 on-base percentage and three home runs.

The Coyotes are seeking a second consecutive trip to the NJCAA Division I World Series.

Rosson accolade

Hunter Rosson was named Co-Big-10 Player of the Week on April 29. The senior from Aledo played outfield for two games against Wright State and first base in two games against Michigan State. He batted .545 with six hits, scored six runs and drove in a dozen runs.

His hits included three home runs, with a grand slam. He had his best day at the plate as a Buckeye, going 3-for-4 against Michigan State with six RBI. He was a triple shy of hitting for the cycle.

For the season, Rosson was leading the Buckeyes with a .355 batting average at the time of his honor, along with driving in 18 runs.

Prior to coming to Ohio State, Rosson began his college career at Weatherford College. He batted .305 with 14 home runs and 52 RBI.

Rosson is a 2018 graduate of Aledo. The former Bearcat battled a hamstring injury and the outbreak of COVID in his first two collegiate seasons.

Willems Player of the Month

Creed Willems, a 2021 Aledo graduate, has been named the Player of the Month for April in the South Atlantic League. The catcher, playing for the Aberdeen (Maryland) Ironbirds, a High-A affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles, posted a .299 average with league bests of six home runs, 21 RBI, a .642 slugging percentage and 43 total bases.

Willems was drafted by the Orioles in 2021. This is his second stint with Aberdeen as he spent 75 games there last season, hitting nine home runs and driving in 47 runs. He also spent 30 games in his second stint with Low-A Delmarva (Maryland) last season (he was also there for 68 games in 2022), batting .302 with eight home runs and 28 RBI.

Overall, his professional statistics include a .218 batting average, 27 home runs and 120 RBI. He also has 68 walks and 31 doubles.
