Event offers knowledge, perks to veterans

Posted

Even a well-informed service veteran may not know all the benefits, services and amenities offered to them. Army Veteran Mark Lusk learned there is much he didn’t know about resources for Vets, and he is directly connected to several local veterans’ organizations. Lusk’s volunteer work with local veterans’ organizations and nonprofits earned him the 2024 Parker County Chamber of Commerce Pappy Thompson Community Service Award.

“I’m very involved in the Veterans community and I didn’t know who some of these people were,” Lusk said of 10 organizations attending the information event.  “So, if I didn’t know, I don’t know how anybody else is going to know.”

The event will be 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 21, at Shep’s, 202 Fort Worth Hwy., two blocks east of the Courthouse. Veterans organizations and nonprofits, as well as Weatherford College, will have information booths informing Vets of benefits the school offers.

John Shepherd, owner of Shep’s Restaurant where the event will be held, is also an Army Vet.

Money from sponsors, drawings, and silent auction items will be divided among the local veteran services groups. Anthem Summerville and band, In Focus, are scheduled to provide live entertainment.
