Ladycats split season-opening matches at Waco Midway

Aledo sophomore setter Mallory Powell (20) and senior hitter Jordan Jacobs (15) put up the block during the Ladycats victory over Granbury Monday night at Waco Midway. The Ladycats swept Granbury but fell to Midway.

The Aledo Ladycats swept their afternoon match against Granbury but fell in the nightcap against Waco Midway Monday (Aug. 9) in season-opening matches at Midway High School.

The Ladycats swept Granbury, 25-12, 26-24 and 25-23. Game two was finished off by a kill from senior outside hitter Lindsey Baird, and the clinching game three was closed out by a kill from senior outside hitter Christa Daniel.

Midway swept the Ladycats, but each game was close. The Pantherettes won the first two games by identical 25-20 scores, and closed out the match with a 25-23 win in game three.

The Ladycats will play next at the Grapevine tournament Friday and Saturday, Aug. 13-14. Pool play begins Friday as the Ladycats face Richland at 2:30 p.m. Aledo will play at 4:30 p.m. against Sam Houston, and conclude Friday's pool play with a 6:30 p.m. match against Frisco Liberty.

Bracket play will begin Saturday with start times and matchups to be determined after pool play.

In sub-varsity action Monday night at Midway, the Ladycats junior varsity defeated Granbury, 25-19, 18-25, 25-14, but fell to Midway, 20-25, 19-25.

The Ladycats freshman "A" team defeated Midway two games to one, while the Aledo freshman "B" team beat Granbury in a two-game sweep.
