The Parker County Master Gardeners will present a free composting seminar from 9:30-11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 12 at the Willow Park Demonstration Garden and community center, 101 Stagecoach Trail. Presented by a Master Gardener Composting Specialist, this program will feature the Master Gardeners’ composting station at the gardens. Attendees will learn the benefits of composting and exactly how to set up their own home composting area. Composting can be easy, inexpensive and the results only save money, promote a healthier and more beautiful lawn and garden, and help the environment.

As the weather has finally changed, gardeners are able to get back out into their gardens and yards, assessing damage from a miserable summer, preparing for winter and just plain enjoying the outdoors. As the leaves begin to fall from trees, they will remind us of the long, mild afternoons ahead that will be spent raking yards. For some of us, piles of leaves make us think of composting. Ideally we should all think of composting. This year, instead of bagging and sending them to a landfill, consider using those leaves by beginning or adding to your composting area.

Composting is one of the cheapest and most valuable gardening techniques in gardening history. It can be as simple and as inexpensive as starting a composting pile on the bare earth. It can also be a little more elaborate by setting up cages or containers. A combination of carbon and nitrogen materials along with oxygen and moisture will lead to a “cooking” process that produces what is known as “gold dirt” because the final product is so rich and full of nutrients. Regardless of how gardeners choose to get started, the steps to composting are easy, needed materials are readily available and nature provides the real work while the gardener gets the credit and the benefits.
