Bearcats win District 6-4A golf championship by 22 strokes over Birdville

Merrell finishes in second place overall after 2-hole playoff loss to Collings

Tony Eierdam/The Community News: Aledo's Jeffrey Merrell chips onto the 18th green at Waterchase Golf Course in Fort Wort during the first-place playoff for top medalist at the District 6-4A tournament. Merrell finished second overall to lead the Bearcats Black team, which won the tournament by 22 strokes.

Aledo's Jeffrey Merrell shot a 75 today in the final round of the boys District 6-4A golf tournament at Waterchase Golf Club in Fort Worth for a final total of 147 to pace the Bearcats Black team to a final-round score of 317 and a 36-hole total of 629 to win the tournament by 22 strokes over Birdville.

The Bearcats and Birdville will advance to the regional tournament in San Angelo. The 36-hole tournament will be played Monday and Tuesday, April 19-20, at Quicksand Golf Course.

Aledo's Orange team shot a 330 for a 36-hole total of 663 and placed third overall.

Merrell and Birdville's Zach Collings each finished with a 147 which forced a playoff for top medalist. Collings shot a 73 today to erase the two-stroke deficit he brought into the final round in the race for top medalist. Collings won on the second hole of the playoff when he birdied the par-5, 18th hole.

Aledo Black's Merrell and Sean Shelton earned all-district, first-team honors along with Aledo Orange's Brandon Wilkins, who shot a 79 today for a two-round total of 160.

Earning all-district, second-team honors from Aledo Black were Taylor Mihoh and Chilton McKnight, while earning second-team, all-district form the Orange team were Trevor Rice and Brett Nicholson.

Other Aledo Black scores include Shelton with an 81 for a two-round total of 154, McKnight with an 84 (163 total), Dillon Trimmer with an 83 (168) and Mihok with an 81 (167).

Other Orange team scores include Trevor Rice with an 81 (163), Nicholson with an 84 (167), Taylor Norton with an 86 (175), Teddie Johnson with a 90 (177) and Cameron Chapin with a 94 (187).

With the first-place finish, the entire Black team qualifies for the regional meet along with Wilkins, who qualified as a medalist.
