Gailon Hardin, past President of the Native Plant Society of Texas, will speak about the use of native plants in landscaping at the Cross Timbers Chapter May 12th meeting at 7:00 pm at Harberger Hill Community Building, 701 Narrow Street in Weatherford.

Do not let the rain that we have had over the past few days trick you into believing that growing non-native exotics on your property is a good idea. They require extra water, fertilizers, pesticides, and hours of work to maintain them; all of which are unwise choices for the quality of our land and water plus a strain on our budgets.

You can decide to change this by planting native plants which require no extra watering once established and are naturally disease and bug resistant. Then you can sit back and watch the many birds, insects, mammals, and reptiles that depend on native plants for food and shelter. Come join us to learn how to convert your land into a native plant habitat.

Gailon Hardin is a retired accountant who started her next career learning about native plants. She has developed a sustainable native plant landscape on her property that only requires watering of established plants during times of drought. She is such a native plant enthusiast that her three dogs, Chilie Pequin, Sumac, and Lancelota, are named after Texas native plants.

The Cross Timbers Chapter of NPSOT meets the second Thursday of the month at Harberger Hill Community Center, 701 Narrow Street in Weatherford. The chapter business meeting will begin at 6:30 pm followed by a social at 6:45 pm with the program starting at 7:00 pm. Our mission is to promote the conservation, research, and utilization of native plants and plant habitats in Texas through education, outreach, and example. For more information, contact Eileen Porter 817-596-5567. The public is welcome.
