Bearcats Opponent and Ticket Information

December 6, 2010 by Steve Keck

Aledo’s opponent in the Class 4A state semi-final game in Mansfield is a surprise to almost everyone except Head Coach Randy Jackson. The once powerful Mesquite Poteet Pirates were a combined 1-19 over the past two seasons. Jackson completed an extreme makeover in the matter of a few months and transformed the Pirates into a powerful football team.

Poteet is 13-2 and has mowed down some pretty impressive teams this season. They play in one of the toughest districts in the area with Corsicana, West Mesquite, Waxahachie, and Ennis among others.

During the playoffs, Poteet defeated Bastrop last week 42-35 despite giving up over 600 yards to the Bears. The week before, the Pirates defeated heavily favored and state-ranked Highland Park. The Scots were undefeated until they ran into Poteet. The Pirates have forced 11 turnovers during the playoffs including three last week and five against Highland Park.

The Poteet offense is a quick-tempo, no-huddle spread offense. Quarterback Beau Novell is not a threat to run, but has passed for 3,060 yards and 31 touchdowns this season. Novell is under center more than in the shotgun formation.

Jackson brought a new attitude to the Mesquite Poteet program. He put up motivational signs and told his team they would play in Cowboys Stadium this season. Let’s hope he meant for the playoff game against Highland Park and not the state championship game.
