Aledo soccer teams sweep Boswell

March 5, 2010 by Tony Eierdam

Getting primed for postseason play, both the Aledo Ladycats and Bearcats soccer teams won easily against Boswell in District 12-4A matches played today (Friday, March 5) at Bearcat Stadium.

The Bearcats began the evening's games with a 5-2 win over the Pioneers, while the Ladycats strolled to an easy 6-1 victory over the Lady Pioneers in the nightcap.

The district-champion Bearcats raised their 12-4A mark to 11-0.

The win raises the second-place Ladycats district record to 7-4. Although they have not lost a game on the field in district play, the Aledo girls were forced to forfeit earlier district matches against Saginaw, Boswell, Brewer and Springtown due to a clerical mistake regarding a student's "incomplete" grade, according to AHS head coach Derek Vierling.

Both teams will conclude district play against Saginaw on Tuesday, March 9, at Bearcat Stadium.

Aledo forward Thomas Davis led the Bearcats with three goals, with Yusef Marwan and Matt Nickell each adding a goal.

Nickell, Marwan, Chris Twedell and Brady Lain each recorded an assist in the game that saw the Bearcats take a 4-1 lead at the half.

March 3, 2010 by Tony Eierdam

Birdville pitcher Randi Fentress held Aledo to four hits while striking out nine to lead the Lady Hawks to a 4-0 win over the Ladycats Wednesday night in the District 6-4A softball opener at Birdville High School.

The Ladycats (5-6, 0-1 in 6-4A) will take a break from district action and play Thursday through Saturday (March 4-6) at the A&M Consolidated tournament in College Station.

Ladycats pitcher Sarah Simpson took the loss in the circle for Aledo. The senior allowed two earned runs on six hits with four walks and four strikeouts.

"Sarah pitched a pretty good game," Ladycats head coach Jeff Lemons said. "We made a few errors that didn't help her and led to two unearned runs, but I was pleased with the command she had on her pitches. It's just the first district game, and there is no panic here."

Junior lead-off hitter Carolyn Clayton led the Ladycats at the plate with two hits, including a triple.

Also recording a hit for Aledo were senior first baseman Rebecca Phillips with a double and junior shortstop Lauren Durham with an infield single.
