Taste of Parker County

April 26, 2013 by Jennifer Retter

Event Date:
Thu, 05/16/2013 (All day)

For the fifth consecutive year, local restaurants and caterers will gather in one place with one goal in mind: to make sure no one leaves the “Taste of Parker County” hungry. The event, scheduled for Thursday, May 16, at the Parker County Sheriff’s Posse Clubhouse, is a fundraiser for the Weatherford College Foundation and its “The Time is Now for Your College” capital campaign.

With the purchase of a $35 advance ticket ($40 at the door), patrons can enjoy samples from all of the participating vendors, and can even go back for seconds...or thirds.

“This is one of our favorite nights of the year,” said Brent Baker, executive director of the WC Foundation. “No speaker, no program…the star of the night is the food.”

Several vendors are returning for the fifth consecutive year, including The Wild Mushroom, Golden Moon, Rosa’s Café, City Kitchen, Chicken Express, Yesterdays Sandwich Shop and Buffalo Wild Wings, Rahr & Sons Brewing Company, Ben E. Keith Beverages, Boo-Rays of New Orleans, 2 Outlaws, Taco Cabana, Starbucks and Yogurt Story.

New vendors this year include Copper Creek Restaurant and Short Chef Creations Catering. Other vendors have also expressed interest.

“Last year, we sold out of vendor spaces, and we expect to do the same this year,” Baker said. “There’s no way anyone is leaving this event hungry.”

Sponsors this year are Southwest Auto Group, First National Bank of Weatherford and Plains Capital Bank.

Artists reception

April 9, 2013 by Jennifer Retter

Event Date:
Mon, 04/15/2013 - 6:00pm - 7:00pm

A reception for the artists featured in the Weatherford College Student Art Exhibition will be held from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Monday, April 15, in the Marjorie Black Alkek Center. The public is invited to meet the artists while enjoying light refreshments and works on display.

Works cover a wide range of subject matter and techniques, featuring a variety of media, including ebony, charcoal, scratchboard, acrylic, oil, watercolor, colored pencil, clay, copper, plaster and mixed media. Some artwork will be offered for sale.

WC art students come from a wide variety of backgrounds, ages, cultures and hometowns. Students come from as far away as Germany and as near as Weatherford and span a wide range in ages.

“Always, the reception is a highlight for these artists as they have the opportunity to share their art with the public,” said Myrlan Coleman, art instructor. “This is an exceptional group of students who has produced unique and exciting works. Each student seems to work in his or her own individual style and technique and yet they all seem to be excited about learning to try new things and are looking forward to having the opportunity to exhibit their talents and skills.”

The exhibition will be open through April 19. For more information, contact Coleman at mcoleman@wc.edu.

Special to The Community NewsFrom Weatherford College

Five actors will play 39 characters in Mark Brown's comedy adventure adaptation of Jules Verne's "Around the World in 80 Days," at the Alkek Fine Arts Center on the Weatherford College campus Feb. 21-23. Curtain rises at 7:30 p.m. each evening. Admission is free.

Directed by Nancy McVean and produced by special arrangement with the Dramatic Publishing Company of Woodstock, Illinois, the show is WC’s entry in the annual Texas Community College Theatre Festival, which will be held at Lone Star College in Tomball, Texas, later this month.

Based on French author Jules Verne's 1873 novel, the play follows the journey of Phileas Fogg around the world as he tries to beat the clock to win a wager that he can make the trip in 80 days - a huge feat in pre-airplane days.

McVean said the fast-paced production is a physically exhausting play to act in, with no moments to rest.

“The five actors have to be nimble as well as gifted with comic timing, for personality and costume changes come with riotous, breathtaking rapidity. Hats, beards, coats, turbans, genders and accents ricochet around the stage as each character does his turn, then tears off to assume another role, sometimes only for a matter of seconds.”
