Parker County Peach Festival

June 23, 2014 by Phil Major

Event Date:
Sat, 07/12/2014 - 8:00am

The 30th Annual Parker County Peach Festival is shaping up to be one of the best. Organizers are busy with more than 200 art/craft, food and activity vendors. More than 35,000 folks flocked to Weatherford for this outstanding one day event last year. This year’s organizers are planning for an even better event held in Historic Downtown Weatherford Saturday, July 12, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
There’s no better way to beat the summer heat than by enjoying some peachy treats. Visitors can get their fill of homemade peach ice cream, peach cobbler, peach pie, peach juleps, peach tea, peach smoothies, ice cream topped with fresh peaches or just plain ol’ juicy peaches, eaten with the fuzz. And yes, plenty of Parker County peaches.
There’s food, fun and non-stop entertainment for the entire family. Take children to the Kiddie Korner for slides, rides and face painting.
More than 200 quality arts and crafts, produce and food vendors will line the historic streets of downtown for shopping with the charming Parker County Courthouse as the backdrop. Many antique and specialty stores will have specials throughout the day so be sure and visit the downtown merchants as well.
Along with the festival, there’s also the 25th Annual Peach Pedal Bike Ride with more than 2,200 cyclists. This peachy event has grown each year and continues to gain momentum. Since moving the event to Weatherford High School in 2008 the pedal has grown and gets better each year. To get more information on this popular bike ride visit www.peachpedal.com

CASA grief recovery program

June 5, 2014 by Phil Major

Event Date:
Repeats every week until Mon Jun 23 2014 .
Mon, 06/16/2014 - 6:00pm
Mon, 06/23/2014 - 6:00pm

CASA will soon offer a Grief Recovery for Children training for their volunteer advocates and community members. This training is based on the Grief Recovery Method and will be utilizing the book “When Children Grieve”. The training will be conducted by Barb Tucker, CASA – Hope for Children Executive Director, who is a Certified Grief Recovery Specialist and has been working with foster children for over 25 years.
All children experience grief, but children in foster care, especially need adults in their lives who understand how to help them deal with their many losses.
Simply defined, grief is the normal and natural reaction to significant emotional loss of any kind. Foster children are removed from everything they are familiar with and placed in a home that may be far from their family, neighborhood, school and friends. Although there is no doubt these children were removed from their family for many valid reasons, children will be confused and hurt. When you remove a child from all that they are familiar with and place them in a totally strange environment it is only natural to grieve the loss of their family.
An informational meeting about the training will be from 6- 7 p.m. Monday, June 16 at the CASA – Hope for Children office, 701 Palo Pinto St., Suite 701F, Weatherford. The Grief Recovery for Children class will be from 6-8 p.m. Monday, June 23, also at the CASA office. For more information, call 817-599-6224.
