The Aledo Lions Club Youth Football and Cheer Association will host its third annual community wide garage sale from 8 a.m. to noon this Saturday, Aug. 17 inside the Aledo Community Center. The garage sale is one of the largest fundraisers for the Aledo Lions Club Youth Activities and this year will have more than 60 families donating items from TVs, exercise equipment, furniture, bicycles, toys, sports equipment and clothing.
The Aledo Lions Club Youth Activities is the founding organization for youth tackle football, cheerleading and basketball in Aledo. The Aledo Lions Club Youth Activities is the largest youth sporting association in Aledo offering multiple sporting opportunities with more than 700 youth participating last year.

The Aledo Lions Club Youth Football and Cheer will hold sign-ups from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, May 11, at the Aledo Community Center. The league is also looking for coaches. Players should be present to be fitted and receive football equipment for the upcoming season. The cost is $240 for football players and $50 for new cheerleaders. Leagues are age based and open to children ages 9-12 as of September 21, 2013. Super Bowl games will be played at the Dallas Cowboys Stadium. For more information, visit aledoyouthfootball.com.

Aledo Lions Club Youth Basketball League signups will be from 1-4 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 4 and Sunday, Nov. 11 at Aledo Middle School Gym #1. Players must currently be enrolled from first grade through eighth grade. All players must attend one of the two signups, be dressed in basketball attire and be prepared for a brief tryout for placement on a team. Cost is $95 per player. Lions Club District 2-E2 will hold an Outstanding Youth Contest in April 2013 open to high school juniors and seniors. Requirements include a biography, interview, transcript, three letters of recommendation and a 750 word essay. Judging will be based on community service/leadership (30 percent), interview (30 percent), grade point (20 percent), letters of recommendation (15 percent), bio and essay (five percent). Two $1,000 scholarships will be awarded. In addition, the winners advance to the State Contest in May 2013 to compete for additional prizes. Lions Club District 2-E2 will hold a Drug Awareness Poster Contest in January of 2013. Divisions are for grades 3-4, grades 5-6, grades 7-9 and grades 10-12. The contest theme is “The Dangers and or Consequences in the Use of Drugs or Tobacco.” Gift cards of $100, $50 and $25 will be awarded in each division. Entries should be hand drawn, poster board, 14 x 22 inches only. Judging Criteria will be on quality, clarity, originality and spelling. The Lions Club will host a Peace Poster Contest for youth on Nov. 15. The theme of the posters is “Imagine Peace.” Children from age 11 to 13 may participate. The top three poster makers will receive $100, $75. and $50 gift cards respectively. The posters must be hand done, greater than 13 x 20 in., smaller than 20 x 24 in., no mat or frame, no lettering or numbering, and 2-dimensional only. Aledo Youth Lions basketball signups will run from 1-4 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 6 and Sunday, Nov. 13 at Aledo Middle School. All players must attend one of the signups for a brief skills evaluation or they are ineligible to play - no exceptions. Grades 1 - 8 are eligible (boys and girls divisions). Costs is $95 per player and includes an eight-game schedule, jersey, t-shirts and yard signs.

Items for sale will include clothing, furniture, sports equipment, exercise equipment, toys, household items and more. All proceeds directly benefit the youth of Aledo through the Aledo Lions Club.
